Monday Notes – November 16, 2009

Svetlana posted this note at the gym.  She added, “When I’m feeling down, posting a note lifts my spirits. I had a doctor appointment this morning and posted a note on the mirror in each of their bathrooms – it’s an OB-GYN so I know a lot of pregnant women and moms will see it. I had my baby girl last year and I remember how awkward your own body can feel sometimes when it’s changing so much – we need a little reminder that change is beautiful too!”

Rachel said, “I have sent in public Operation Beautiful notes before, but this one is different. I am slowly working on getting healthy and learning to love myself.  I am especially self-conscious of myself when I sweat.  This creates a problem for me because I have started going to the gym on my lunch hour and always come back to work red-faced.  The other day as I was getting ready to leave the gym I snapped a picture of myself and did a bit of Operation Beautiful editing.  Now I carry it with me to remind me that I truly am beautiful, especially when I sweat!”

Melanie wrote, “I am a freshman in college, and for the first time I have been taken out of the comfort zone of my tiny town. I now see people look at me and wonder what they are thinking. I was having one of these days, when I thought that everyone was just looking straight through me when I found a note on the mirror in a bathroom on campus. It read, "look in the mirror! you are beautiful!" Instantaneously, a smile formed and for the first time in a long time, I felt it reach my eyes. Someone had taken time out of their day to write a sweet note, just to let someone know that they are beautiful. My first instinct was to grab the note off the mirror and keep it for myself, to remind myself that I am beautiful. But, then I had a second though, I left the note there for someone else to find and hopefully enjoy as much as I did. At the bottom of the note had been the Operation Beautiful website, so I rushed over to the library to see what influenced this person to write this note. When I went to the website and saw what operation beautiful is, I was instantly hooked. This is my first note that I have posted, and there will be many more to come. It is amazing how one simple act of kindness can change someone’s day, or even their life.”

Gina from Appalachian State University wrote, “I found this site last night, and have spent every spare moment today making post-its. So far I’ve already spread eleven throughout my college campus. I put my very first one in a bathroom stall and as I was walking out of it, another girl walked into it. I saw her pause, read it, and smile. That was one of the best smiles I’d ever seen. I hope to make many more women around my school smile by seeing these.”

I’m a high school teacher and had a very rough day with some students yesterday. During 4th period today, a former student walked in and gave me a yellow piece of paper that said “You make someone out there smile. (Yes, YOU!) Keep your shining smile on display for the world to embrace.” My students were eager to know what it said, so I read it outloud and asked them if they knew what “Operationbeautiful.com” was. Nobody knew! I ran to the computer and typed it in, then told them about it. THANK YOU! I will definitely participate with sticky notes and email you some pictures! :)
