Monday Notes – July 6, 2009

Laura wrote, "Women are often their own personal worst critic. I do not have enough self esteem. I often wonder where people get it. Was it in some aisle in the grocery store I keep passing by? I have amazing friends and family but there are times when I wonder what they see in me. I am definitely no swimsuit model. I prefer to be behind the camera instead of in front of it. While I don’t bathe in a ton of confidence, I do acknowledge good parts about me little by little."

Debbie wrote, "Today I felt inspired to put these up at Norris Cancer Hospital in East Los Angeles.  One was on a post in the hallway near the entrance (I saw a woman stop walking and read it), one in the lab-draw area and one on the gift shop that sells wigs and hats for people who have lost their hair to chemotherapy."

Carrie wrote, "I posted this Operation Beautiful note for myself in the middle of my notebook at work awhile ago. I knew I’d see it later, but I didn’t know exactly when. I forgot about it and found it yesterday after a weekend vacation to visit my sister. I had been feeling a little guilty for some of the treats we indulged in, but this note reminded me that breaks are part of taking care of myself too!"

Sarah wrote, "Today at the grocery store, I stuck a couple "you’re beautiful" notes on dieting products, but I figured I would broaden the idea to include age and color. I left a note on a box of hair relaxer marketed to black women, and one on a box of hair color for getting rid of grays.  I hope they’ll give a boost to some woman hating her natural African-American hair or feeling lesser for getting older. If you look at magazine covers, the women aren’t just skinny… They’re 20 years-old and white! This narrow definition of beauty is an insult to all of us. Let’s celebrate all the beautiful skin tones, wrinkles, perspectives, hair types and wisdom that help make up womankind (and mankind). Thank you for starting this awesome movement!"

This is a fantastic concept. We all are beautiful, even when we don’t see it. This web site drives home the importance of looking beyond the surface for the beauty that lies throughout our bodies, our lives, ourselves. I will be sharing these sentiments.

Hi Caitlin,

It is exciting to see that you brought your positive message to Orlando’s local TV. .. The more we focus on our actions and the less we focus on our appearance – the more beautiful we are. Your message is right on target.

Caitlin – Love this whole idea! I’ve been reading for awhile, but haven’t written my note yet. Consider this a promise that I will work on Operation Beautiful tomorrow for sure!! I’m going to put up some notes in the restroom outside our classroom we use for gastric bypass surgery nutrition classes!

Caitlin has inspired me, some on GMH.com, and many others to do some good in the world. We’re extending what Caitlin’s done with Operation Beautiful and we’re just trying to help people overall. Site won’t be up and running till we get enough submissions but for now you can go for more info: http://www.givesmehope.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=134
