Lauren wrote, “Last year at my elementary school, we had a speaker who told us about loving ourselves.  She also told us about Operation Beautiful.  All of the girls were fascinated!!! I could not believe I had never heard of such a beautiful movement! So, we all posted post-it notes all over our school.  Now, I am at a new school, with middle schoolers and high schoolers and I think Operation Beautiful is even more necessary at my new school.  In middle school especially, girls are trying to figure out who they are and constantly judging themselves by their reflection in the mirror.  I just made a bunch of post-its and I can hardly wait to post them tomorrow! I am so excited to make an impact on my school! I cannot wait to see if Operation Beautiful will catch on at my school!”

One day, I took the chance and brought my pink post-its to my school’s bathroom. What do you know? Someone DID catch me! It was Jenna, one of my best girlfriends. We proceeded to decorate the WHOLE BATHROOM with pink stickies- this was only about halfway done! This is going to be our new Friday tradition… Jenna & I hope we can make a difference in the way the chicas at our middle school see themselves and others.”

Jacqui wrote, “I bought a new rolling blade and cutting mat for my scrapbook work, and figured making little notes for Operation Beautiful was the perfect way to test them out. I keep all the notes in a little gift-bag in my handbag, so whenever I’m out in public, I can delve into it and leave something lovely for whoever happens to find it. The second picture is my favorite notes (and yes, the one on the top is what Spike says to Buffy in the last season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I always thought it was a beautiful speech).”

Katie wrote, “I have recently beaten cancer, so I’m bald. Sometimes I feel like I’m not as pretty as other people because I haven’t got hair, but one day when I was still in hospital (about 7 1/2 weeks)  my friends came to my house to decorate to celebrate my coming home. The made a big poster and a small poster saying things like “You’re beautiful!” “With hair or without you’re gorgeous!” So to this day when I’m feel like I’m not pretty, I look at those posters and it reminds me ‘You ARE beautiful.’ I want to make other people feel beautiful too, so I left this in a book at the library!”

Dear Operation Beautiful fans:

Over the past two and a half years, I have been continuously amazed at your dedication to the Operation Beautiful movement.  When I posted the first note after a crummy day, I never imagined the concept would go viral and become the movement it is today – and I owe it all to YOU. 

Since the site launched, tens of thousands of notes have been posted all over the world, in dozens of languages, on every continent (even Antarctica!), and by women and men of all ages.  Last year, I began to notice that more and more pre-teen and teen girls were posting Operation Beautiful notes at their schools.  These girls e-mailed me and said that posting the notes helped them – and their classmates – feel more beautiful and accepted.  And that’s how the concept for the Operation Beautiful:  For Best Friends book was born.

Operation Beautiful: For Best Friends is targeted to 8 – 14 year old girls and addresses topics like friendships, bullying, love, life, puberty, parents, finding a passion, and healthy living.  The book includes 100 notes and stories from girls who live and breathe Operation Beautiful every single day. 

And, if you’re a supporter of the Girls on the Run organization (like I am!), you’ll be happy to hear that Molly Barker, the amazing founder and vision keeper of GOTR, has written a letter to girls on the inside back jacket of the book.

Cameron wrote, “My use-to-be best friend had called me out for being ‘too smart’ and I wasn’t allowed to speak to her again. I ran into the nearest bathroom bawling but by chance I happened to glance at the mirror and saw this AMAZING note that just said ‘Beautiful.’ I immediately stopped crying and cleaned myself off and walked out with confidence. It was only a couple hours later when I realized I left the note in the bathroom, when I went back to grab it, it was already gone. To be honest, I don’t regret leaving it there because I know it must’ve made someone else’s day too!”

Abby wrote, “I’m 15 years old and I’m from Pennsylvania. At the end of last year, my best friend was getting ready to move to a new school. Before she left, she said she wanted to make a difference in people’s lives at our school. She then went on to tell me about the Operation Beautiful website. She said that she had been sticking 2 Post-it notes in the bathrooms every day for the past few months. On the last day of school she decided she wanted to blow up the bathroom with the Post-its and asked for my help. So that morning we met in the bathroom and did just that.Throughout the day we would be walking down the hall together and see all these girls with the notes. We saw them with smiles on their faces and showing their friends and just talking about how awesome it was.…. Operation Beautiful has also helped me very much. Even though I have never had any major issues such as, an eating disorder, cutting myself, etc., I have had those thoughts where you look at yourself in the mirror and you just don’t like what you see. I have put myself down many times and for many reasons. However, reading the uplifting posts on the website has helped me a lot. I see myself in a completely different way, and I just don’t care what others think of me. Also, I got the Operation Beautiful book for Christmas and just started reading it last night. I could not put it down! Reading all the stories from people about how they’ve turned their lives around and everything was just amazing.”

Marisa wrote, “I was recently at George Mason University’s campus this past weekend for an event they were holding and ended up posting over a 40+ Operation Beautiful notes. By the time I left the bathroom, several spots on the mirrors and every stall door had a sticky note. I kept posting more every time I had the chance, and I would recheck the spots I had posted them previously and I would post more if some people had taken them. During one of the times I had gone to see if the were still there, I noticed that there were notes in the bathroom on the paper by the mirrors that i hadn’t noticed before. They were response to what I had done. I am 16 years old, and I do this to make someone else smile, and what they had done made ME smile!”

Rachel wrote, “I am in AP Psychology. And of the most recent topics that we have discussed was Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of Motives. In this pyramid, the 4th section from the bottom (bottom is the most needed to survive) is a category of Esteem Needs, which is the need for self-esteem, achievement, competence, and independence; as well as the need for recognition and respect from others.  In the 3rd section from the bottom is a category of Belongingness and Love Needs – the need to love, to be loved, to belong, to be accepted, and to avoid loneliness and separation.  While talking about these sections, my teacher showed us the Operation Beautiful website. And right after that class at lunch, I walked into the bathroom and there was a sticky note on the mirror! This is a great cause for spreading kindness and possibly saving lives. You never know. A girl could have just been bullied and went into the bathroom to try to overdose to commit suicide… seeing that note could  be the thing that saves her life!”

Giovanni wrote, “I’m the student body president at my high school and one of my favorite projects is Operation Beautiful.  I feel like it’s had a very positive effect on several girls in the school.  At the beginning of the school year, I posted several sticky notes in both of the girl’s bathrooms, I also put a sticky note in all the girl’s lockers. Each sticky note had an encouraging, or sweet message, and I hoped that they would go noticed. We’re hoping to start a project called “True you Tuesdays” in which we will encourage the girls to go without makeup for a day, wearing a shirt that will say ’I am Beautiful’, the boys will be wearing a button that will say “I support Operation Beautiful”. I hope that several people participate and that it will leave an impact. I absolutely LOVE Operation Beautiful, walking into the bathroom when I’m upset helps me feel better just because the notes are so sweet and encouraging. I also leaves sticky notes in the bathrooms of public places around my hometown. Everyone knows I do it, and I’ve gotten a lot of thanks for it. But I’d like to say thanks you girls! Y’all are INCREDIBLE.”
