The Mission

The goal of the Operation Beautiful website is to end negative self-talk or “Fat Talk.”  If this little blog only does one productive thing, I hope it helps readers realize how truly toxic negative self-talk is  — it hurts you emotionally, spiritually, and physically.

Through my own experiences fighting Fat Talk, I’ve realized the power behind an anonymous act such as Operation Beautiful.  When I post a note, I’m saying, “I CHOOSE to be positive!”

I began Operation Beautiful by leaving positive messages on the mirrors of public restrooms — at work, at the gym, at the grocery store.  I scribble down whatever comes to mind — "You are beautiful!" or "You are amazing just the way you are!"  My personal goal is to leave as many Operation Beautiful notes as I can. Maybe some people read them and just smile, but I bet some people are truly touched by the effort of a random stranger.

Operation Beautiful is simple: all you need is a pen and a piece of paper.  If you want to join the mission, send me an e-mail at OperationBeautiful@gmail.com with a photograph of your Operation Beautiful note or a description of your experience, and I’ll post it on the Operation Beautiful site for thousands of others to read and enjoy!

i love this idea
cause i myself have somewhat of a low self esteem
i keep thinking things such as, “woah, she’s so pretty” “she’s so thin” “she has a great voice, why dont i have any talent.”

~and people need to know that they’re beautiful for who they are, not what they are. there’s so much pressure from peers, media, etc… we at least need something to remind us that “YOU’RE BEAUTIFUL” :)

I do that too, but this is changing me. I hope I have school tomorrow!

I love this! My friends got me into writing notes. i’ve left several around town. And multiple at my school. :) My friend and i also put one i our lockers to remind us of how beautiful we are! It’s a great reminder. :) But Operation Beautiful is absolutely Amazing!! I plan to keep posting notes. :D

it’s really hard to leave post-its around the place BYU-I, because there’s not even grafiti in the bathrooms. I left a few tonight, and I’m just hoping that whoever cleans the bathrooms tonight will leave the notes. I know the feeling of finding a “happinote” on a bad day; it’s one of my favourite emotions ever. Please keep posting, ladies, it does someone a world of good.

i am going to start doing his tomorrow. I would love it if i saw one at school, so im gonna make girls happy by putting some up in the bathrooms. As long as they understand what they are for and dont laugh about it.

The main editor of my school’s newspaper put up a note – in the school newspaper. I love the mission and it’s something that i totally believe in.
Everyone has body image issues. Even those that you wouldn’t think of as having a problem, like the skinny/fit ones (me).
I decided as soon as i finished reading the editor’s column to come here and join the crusade.

This site is amazing. It has a really good message that i think everyone should follow. This monday i’m going to go around my school and put up sticky note that say, “You are beautiful on all the mirrors.” Maybe a few other saying too, I want everyone to know that they are beautiful.

Michelle January 31, 2010 at 6:32 pm

I had nothing to do one day so I went on mystery google and soon it brought me to this website. Now I bring sticky notes with me everywhere and post them on bathroom mirrors, stalls, and somtimes even toilets(:

I think this is a really fantastic idea…I posted one the other day at my school that said “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder” and it gives you a good feeling, like you’re making SOMEBODY smile out there.

I think this is a wonderful mission to pursue. All I want sometimes is for someone to tell me I’m beautiful, even though I know everyone is in their own way. As a 16-year-old in a high school hierchy

Erika February 1, 2010 at 2:19 am

I accidently sent that without finishing it. xD The point is, girls in high school rarely get a positive compliment, and I just think Operation Beautiful is an amazing idea. Can’t wait to start leaving post-its.

Oh my gosh I was having a horrible day and then I walked into the bathroom and saw this on the mirror and it totally made my day.

Thank you.
I’ll be sure to pass it on.:)

I found this website page open on one of my school’s computers and immediately went to find some post-it notes. I got to the bathroom and found two other girls writing messages and sticking the post-its to mirrors, doors, hand dryers, and even on toilet paper rolls. This website is truly changing lives.

Hey, my friend Luke Dowler told me about this, and he bought a pack of postit notes, and he said he was going to put them subtly around my school. My opinion was along the lines of ‘okayyy, if you say so’ (he’s a bit eccentric). Today, I was walking to English, and I saw one, and throughout the day, I saw about 6. That doesn’t seem like much, but I know he’s used most of them, so Imma keep on hunting lol!

Today I went into school, after having a really rough weekend, only to find a post it on my locker saying “Smile, someone loves you”. It instantly brought a smile to my face and made me feel as if someone cared. It was the best morning I’ve ever had at school. I want to thank the person at my school who is spreading operation beautiful. You’re amazing

Psalm 139:12014 “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.”

GOD made EACH AND EVERY ONE OF US beautiful!!! And if you think that doesn’t sound special enough, think about this… That verse says he knitted us together. I’m a knitter, and it takes me 12 hours to knit a scarf, and I know every inch of it. How much more intricate is a person? God knows every little thing there is to know about us…and we are wonderfully made :)

Oh my gosh! You literally made my day. I was looking in that mirror at Dorthy Perkins feeling too fat, and ugly, and then out of the corner of my eye i saw this little yellow sticky note, with the most simple message. ‘SMILE! You are beautiful!’
THANK YOU! I love the wonderful spontinuity of your kindness. YOU MADE MY DAY!
I’m joining the campaign! :) xx

I’ve always hated how I looked. I’ve been called names at school, parties, at home by my sisters friends. Soon I just didn’t want to do anything. I tried being more social but all my attemps felt hopeless. I was at school and over-heard some girls talking about OperationBeautiful was lame and stuff so I went home and looked it up and I was inspired. It made me more confident and now I’m spreading the word. <3

Hi I found one of your post-its at my job today. :) We have a big pen display that I’ve been putting post-it notes all around it so people will write on those with the pens to try them out rather than the display lol. It made me happy to find one that was kind and happy than the usual badly-drawn penis or “KAYTIE WUZ HURR.” hahah. :D
Thanks for inspiring people to leave nice notes!

I actually just talked to my english teacher about this campaign and awesome message it sends people… I have to do a project for her class, and while I already had an idea she encouraged me to work on spreading the love through these post-its! I told her that I wanted to do this voluntarily, and she told me to pursue this project instead! I’m so excited to get working on this! I’m going to start tomorrow when I go shopping! YAY! :]

I would love to encourage you to listend to an all girl band called BarlowGirl. They have some awesome music that speaks to girls! One song is called “Mirror” and here are a few words:

“Mirror, mirror on the wall have I got it?
Cause mirror you’ve always told me who I am.
I’m finding it’s not easy, to be perfect.
So sorry you won’t define me, sorry you won’t own me.”

They really encourage girls to be who they are and not try to live up to the standards of this world. They really rock!

Some of the ideas for the week that we are trying to organize include: dropping inspiring notes in every locker in the school, covering the mirrors in the bathrrom for a day, saying inspirational quotes over the loudspeaker, and possibly a walkathon!

There is a stall in one of the bathrooms at my school where is is completely covered in these quotes. It has been there since the beginning of the school year, so the custodians don’t mind us writing all over it. Literally every time I go in that stall i can’t help but smile because people really care.

Eventually, I hope to have a stall covered with Post Its like Olivia’s. I hope you all had an awesome valentine’s Day and that you LOVE YOURSELVES for who YOU are and not what the media tells you to be!

This website made me smile just hearing the name. It’s such an amazing idea, and the first thing I did when I read about it was find all of my post-it notes. I know that if i found a positive message on the mirror of the school bathroom, It’d make me smile, and that’s what I want for the rest of the girls at my school. :)
