The Mission

The goal of the Operation Beautiful website is to end negative self-talk or “Fat Talk.”  If this little blog only does one productive thing, I hope it helps readers realize how truly toxic negative self-talk is  — it hurts you emotionally, spiritually, and physically.

Through my own experiences fighting Fat Talk, I’ve realized the power behind an anonymous act such as Operation Beautiful.  When I post a note, I’m saying, “I CHOOSE to be positive!”

I began Operation Beautiful by leaving positive messages on the mirrors of public restrooms — at work, at the gym, at the grocery store.  I scribble down whatever comes to mind — "You are beautiful!" or "You are amazing just the way you are!"  My personal goal is to leave as many Operation Beautiful notes as I can. Maybe some people read them and just smile, but I bet some people are truly touched by the effort of a random stranger.

Operation Beautiful is simple: all you need is a pen and a piece of paper.  If you want to join the mission, send me an e-mail at OperationBeautiful@gmail.com with a photograph of your Operation Beautiful note or a description of your experience, and I’ll post it on the Operation Beautiful site for thousands of others to read and enjoy!

Hey, i have just come across this website and i think its such a great idea. Just a little thing like posting a sticky note in a place saying something as ‘ your’e beautiful’ makes a little smile on all our faces. I am going to do this now wherever i go, though, i think people should be careful in what they say as some people could take it differently/the wrong way. I agree with this website so much, i used to think i was fat and to be honest, im not. I dont think im fat anymore :) I would love this to go all over the world, i think it would make millions of people smile. And to smile, doesnt take alot of work though it makes you feel so good. :)

that is so sweet, I agree with you. I’m not fat either but I feel like it and put myself down all the time.

I’m a 14 year old girl, and not once have I ever felt confident with my appearence. Last night, I was feeling really upset, thinking about how gorgeous my friends are and how ugly I am. I got on the internet and I seen a link to this website. The more I read, the more I thought how amazing Caitlin is. Caitlin, you’ve started a great thing here. Smiles will be put on a lot of girl’s faces once they see a sticky note telling them they’re beautiful, just the way they are. I can’t wait to go out to the mall with a pen and a pad of sticky notes! (:

I just found out about Operation Beautiful on Momtini.com and this is phenomenal! As women, we need to empower one another. I am a mother of a teenager who just started high school today. Middle and high school girls are obsessed with the way they look, walk, talk, smile, etc. This book should be in every middle and high school in the United States. The teen suicide rates are crazy and some could have been prevented if they were reminded how beautiful, intelligent, outstanding humans that they were. I love this concept.

Hey, I’ve always felt down about myself. I enrolled in a dancing course to get fit and glancing in the mirror in the change room I noticed a post it note with the words “you are beautiful now go and dance your heart out”. It made me smile and gave me a much needed boost. Thank you to whoever put it there, you made my day :) Also. If anyone’s wondering (or hasn’t heard)… this amazing phenomenom has spread to Australia. And I intend on helping it spread further.

Charis August 12, 2010 at 11:12 pm

I was wondering if it was in Australia at all!
And it would seem it is :)
I do believe I’ll have to make it spread even more :D

I love this “mission”!! There are so many young woman out there with an extreme lack of confidence. I just one person told them they were beautiful, I bet it would put a smile on their face! Thank you for this! I plan to be a part of this mission and spread the word! :)

An anon person sent me a message telling me I was beautiful, followed by the link to this website. I think its an amazing thing. So from now on Im going to carry a pen a post-it notes around with me and stick some nice messages in public places. I think I’ll put some around school too. On some random peoples lockers, on random classroom doors, on random tables. Even though that message hadnt put my confidence right up, it made me smile and it lead me to here. And now I can make others smile. :)

My sister and I were in our local mall and we saw one of these small signs on the mirror in the bathroom. It’s a great thing that this reaches all across the country, and even greater that so many random strangers care about other women so much to make these signs. I am starting my first year of college in about 2 weeks and I will try to get this moving there. Thank you so much to everyone who participates! you are amazing :)

On Friday the 13th of August, 2010 I read two of these notes at a local rec center. They made me and some others feel really good about themsleves. So I thought I would check out the website at the bottom of the page. I LOVE IT! I have already made tons and am keeping them in my school folder and purse to put in places when I go. This is a great idea!

I just read about you in Glamour magazine and can’t wait to get my hands on some Post-Its. I have two little girls and it is imperative to me that not only do they demonstrate positive self-talk, but that they see and hear me doing it, too. I hope that the persons who read these notes feel as good about themselves as I did leaving it.

I just found out about this nationwide mission today. After reading up on it and thinking about it all day, I have decided to expand this amazing mission to my area. But there is only one reason why. I am not going to do this for the same reasons the other girls on this website are. I think this is a great thing that helps women deal with the #1 issue women deal with. Their looks in regards to their weight. Now, Im not a woman with an eating disorder or who believes she is overweight, but Im one of the women who deals with other issues. Women deal with many more issues besides their weight. What about women with different self-esteem issues. What about women is abusive relationships. What about women who have lost their independence. What about women who feel like they are always failing at life. Making women feel better about themselves doesnt have to be just about their looks. I dont know about anybody else, but I know that if I were to come across a note that said “You are a strong, independent woman”, or “You are not a failure, you are only a learner” would mean the world to me. I have no intention on changing what this mission stands for. But is there something wrong in expanding it to a bigger sisterhood?

I would of loved to see a note saying I was strong, or not alone, when I went through what I did last winter, I think its a great idea, saying your beautiful can mean many things, this website and idea is the most wonderful thing Ive ever heard of, Im going out tomorrow and getting post its and writing many different messages on them, and keeping them in my purse, I think this not only helps others, but will also make me feel good in the process, Thanks So much for what you are doing.

I think what you are doing is absolutely amazing! I found out about Operation Beautiful a few weeks ago and I just told one of my best friends about it. She and I are both really excited and plan to do this the whole year.

Hii, I’m 17 years old and I have always noticed one thing and it’s the women don’t give themselves that value that they are. I remember once I was coming out of the subway and I saw a sticker in a door that said you’re beautiful and I smiled instantly. It’s unbelievable how just two words can light up your day!! I live in Montreal, Canada and I really want to start posting things up! but in french! :)

I was just at the bank….and left one inside the bottle in which you send your checks up through the roof to the clerk. The person who came through behind me will hopefully feel loved and come to this site to know what its all about. I realized you just don’t HAVE to leave them on mirrors. Leave them other places….like at the bank, or on top of the tip you leave for a waitress. =) Hope this inspires many to leave notes in other places!!!!

one day I was flipping through a magazine and a ‘you are beautiful’ poster caught my eye. I read the short article and said ‘yeah I am beautiful’. Before then I had felt really self-concious about being who I am but I haven’t felt that way since. I cant wait to go back to school and pass on the message! Next time I go to the mall I will be armed with sticky notes and a pen!

Ellie August 20, 2010 at 6:36 pm

I just want to say, I was reading some of the stickies and posters and such, and it brought tears to my eyes. Because I’m not told enough that I’m beautiful, or that I’m special. That is such a POWERFUL word, and the fact that that’s all it takes to make a girl smile and feel great about herself, it’s a wonder that this hasn’t carried on a long time ago. But with this website and this movement, I’m so glad that it’s about to change. So thank you for believing that I am beautiful and that I am special, when hardly many did.

Oh my god-I love you guys! Whoever thought to make this into a mission is- Ah-May-Zing !! :)
I actually saw a tag years ago that simply stated, “you are beautiful.” and it completely changed my outlook for the day. I put up a post-it for myself, on the mirror in my bathroom, and it truly casts a positive outlook. Yes, I plan to contribute to the cause. I put up occasional slogans now and then in public areas (shhhh..) this is a worthwhile cause.
Much love! And, thank you.

Thanks for this site.

I suffer from major depression and plenty of suicidal thoughts because I hate my looks. It’s getting to the point where I don’t want to go outside anymore because I am ashamed and when I am outside, I panic. I also always compare myself to other women and cry when I don’t look like them.

It’s hard to think I am pretty when the media bashes into my head what a women “should” look like. When I go out, the posters, mags, etc are of perfect looking women.

I never loved by body, I started hating myself when I was 5. When I was picked on and left with no friends for my looks. No one has ever said I was, pretty or cute besides my mom and husband.

I am going to start leaving notes at my work, I work at a theme park so plenty of people should see it.

i love this because it simply says you are beautiful…im kind of in the middle (not fat but not skinny), but i am constantly attacked by girls that say im to skinny and that even makes me feel bad about my self. why do girls do that to eachother. they will start with a complament then end with an insult like, “OMG, you look sooo cute, I hate you.” That makes me feel terrible about myself. So to be able to hear that i am beautiful the way i am feels great, and i want to let others know that they don’t need to change a thing about themselves.
